Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), otherwise referred to as Stein-Levanthal syndrome, is typically characterized by excessive androgens along with infrequent cycles and some may have polycystic ovaries that appear on ultrasound.

Over time, much research has been devoted to the study of this disorder especially since its diagnosis can help physicians educate patients about future issues regarding their health.  Increased risks of hypertension, insulin resistance, depression and anxiety, infertility, metabolic syndrome and endometrial cancer are some.

Hallmark symptoms are typically:

  • Infrequent cycles ( 9 periods or less a year)
  • Excessive androgens which are evidenced by increased acne or increased facial hair (or even male patterned baldness)
  • The appearance of polycystic ovaries on ultrasound (ovaries have follicles that measure 2-9 mm and there are 10-12 / ovary
  • Insulin resistance which can be measured either by a 2-hour glucose challenge test, fasting insulin or can sometimes be seen visually on the skin by a condition called acanthosis nigricans
